The tourist attractions to be found within a short drive of Trémolat are many and various. They range from the many prehistoric features of the Vézère valley, including world famous Lascaux caves, to medieval villages and castles, as well as renaissance châteaux and gardens.
The many castles of the Dordogne may not be as well known as the châteaux of the Loire but usually have far more spectacular settings. Beynac and Castlenaud standing aggressively opposite each other across the river are both well worth a visit.
Lanquais, Bannes, Biron, Les Milandes (home of Josephine Baker), Monbazillac and Losse castles are all within easy reach, as well as many other less well known castles.
The Bastide towns, medieval new towns, built partly for defensive and partly commerical reasons by both the English and French, in the 100 Years' War, have many interesting features. The best preserved is Monpazier, whilst Beaumont, Molières, Eymet, Monflanquin and Villeréal are also in easy reach. Domme, which can get very busy in season, is a must for its setting and buildings.
Of the towns, Sarlat is the most picturesque, but again can be very busy especially for the Saturday market. Bergerac has medieval and Perigueux medieval and Roman quarters. Both are lively and attractive regional centres. Further afield, Bordeaux, the regional capital, is a very elegant city. There are train connections to all these from Trémolat station.
Vines are grown in the area but the nearest well known vineyards are around Bergerac. Many wine-growing châteaux here welcome visitors and are certainly more welcoming than the better known Bordeaux equivalents. The nearest of the big names in wine is St. Emilion, which is well worth a visit.
Throughout the year, there are in the area regular markets, village fêtes, antiques and bric-a-brac fairs and concerts, the majority being of course in the summer months.
Activities available in the area include canoeing on the Dordogne or Vézère, which is always popular with visitors, horseriding, golf, tennis and fishing. There are several water-parks with a range of activities.
The region is of course noted for its cuisine and we can recommend many restaurants within a short drive in all price brackets.
